Benevolence Farm
Benevolence Farm is a nonprofit in Graham, North Carolina, that helps formerly incarcerated women and gender expansive people rebuild their lives after prison. On a 13-acre farm, residents receive housing, a living-wage job, and a community that sees them as more than their worst mistakes.
Benevolence Farm sells body care, fragrance, and gift bundles, including healing salves, goat’s milk soaps, and candles. Each product is infused with herbs and flowers grown on the farm and made by residents earning a living wage, so every purchase helps fund someone’s fresh start.
Your Impact
More than 2,500 women and trans people return to North Carolina from prison every year, and many have no safe place to go. Benevolence Farm is one of the only reentry programs in the state that welcomes these people with any conviction record. Residents can live on the farm for up to two years, and everyone earns a living wage. They build transferable skills in agriculture, production, customer service, and quality assurance. Residents also set their own goals around mental health, substance use recovery, family reunification, and more. Over 60 people have called the farm home since 2016, and 85% of alumni remain in the community two years later. This fall, the farm is opening seven tiny homes built for and by formerly incarcerated people, the first community of its kind in the state.
