Outerknown sells tees, shirts, denim, outerwear, and swimwear for men and women, made from organic cotton, hemp, recycled nylon, and other preferred fibers. Each piece blends laid-back surf style with responsible production.

World champion surfer Kelly Slater and designer John Moore launched Outerknown in 2015, after Slater walked away from sponsorships that did not value sustainability. Outerknown became the first brand to earn Fair Labor Association accreditation before selling a single product. In 2017, it launched its first Fair Trade Certified product, and by 2019 every pair of its swim trunks carried that certification. Fair Trade premiums from Outerknown purchases have sent more than $133,000 to workers, who choose how to invest it in healthcare, housing support, and scholarships for their children. About 95% of its fibers come from sustainable sources, including Regenerative Organic Certified cotton from Peru. Its trunks and outerwear use ECONYL, a nylon made from reclaimed fishing nets and other waste.
